How long has sound been around?

Sound has existed since the beginning of the universe, as it is produced by vibrations traveling through a medium, such as air or water. The first sounds likely emerged shortly after the Big Bang, over 13 billion years ago, but for life forms to perceive sound, it took billions of years for the Earth to form and for life to evolve. The earliest known sounds produced by living organisms date back to around 500 million years ago, with the emergence of simple marine animals.
