Why does Perseus have to cut of Medusa s head?

Perseus is tasked with cutting off Medusa's head as part of a quest given to him by King Polydectes, who seeks to rid himself of Perseus. Medusa, one of the three Gorgon sisters, possesses the ability to turn anyone who looks at her into stone.
