1916 is the key date for Standing Liberty quarters. As of 12/2009 values range from $3000 in worn condition to over $10,000 in almost-new condition. Uncirculated specimens retail for $15,000 to $44,000 depending on how well struck they are.

The design was supposed to be first issued in 1917 but for reasons that aren't clear today the Mint "jumped the gun" and made about 52,000 coins with the 1916 date. That compares to around 2 million quarters struck in a normal year during that era. Nearly all 52,000 were put into circulation so they're extremely scarce in better grades.
