Firefighting is a physically exhaustive career. In general, such a profession requires much more physical exertion and prowess than most other office-based careers. This being said, it is important for fire fighters to be in constantly monitored superior physical condition. Due to the extreme nature of the job, it is necessary for its constituents to be prepared physically to respond to whatever situation arises. Generally speaking, sports medicine physicians work with athletes and/or merely active members of the population. Firefighters fall into the latter category, and therefore are often monitored by sports medicine physicians as part of their strict health monitoring plan.
