One theory is that the cold water causes the blood vessels surrounding stomach to shrink, slowing absorption. The body also has to expend energy to heat cold water to body temperature (hydrating the body more quickly). On the other hand, after physical exertion, cold water may help cool the body more effectively than room temperature water.

Note: the Difference between the two are minute and for the most part negligible.

the body uses few calories in order to raise the temp of water, and it does so quickly.
