Arlington House, located in Virginia, was originally owned by George Washington Parke Custis, the adopted grandson of George Washington. He built the estate in the early 1800s as a memorial to Washington and to showcase his wealth and status. After Custis's death, the property was inherited by his daughter, Mary Anna Randolph Custis, who was married to Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The house later became significant as the site of the Arlington National Cemetery after the Civil War.
