When semen is ejaculated into the vagina, the sperm swim through the cervical mucus to reach the uterus and then the fallopian tubes, where fertilization can occur. If fertilization happens, the sperm and egg eventually meet to form an embryo, which implants in the lining of the uterus to develop into a fetus.
