What is the block coefficient of a boat?

It is a ratio obtained by dividing the volume of the hull of the vessel by the volume of a block having the same length, width and height as the vessel's length, beam and depth.

It is used to infer how "streamlined" a vessel is. An oil tanker would normally have a larger block coefficient than a container ship.
