Why you need pilots on ships?

If you're referring to military ships, they house airplanes and helicopters (kind of like a mobile airport) where pilots need to be alert in case there is an incoming threat that they need to immediately take off for. Also, for non-emergency cases where they are just patrolling areas or borders.
