How did king Stephen die?

The symptoms, stomach disorders, may have been cramps but a contemporary, Gervase of Canterbury, describes internal bleeding. These appear to be classic dystentery symptoms. Causes of dystentery are poor hygiene and contaminated food and water. Stephen, perhaps up to a week before the onset of symptoms, would have ingested the dystentery bacteria that proceeded to attack his intestal lining.
