In most cases no only the homeowner or someone authorized by the homeowner is legally allowed to enter a locked home. There are however some exceptions such as when law enforcement or emergency personnel are granted access to a residence. In this case someone outside of home-ownership may enter a locked home if they have a warrant or court order authorizing them to do so.

In addition to law enforcement there are a few other situations in which someone outside of home ownership may enter a locked home:

  • The homeowner has given written permission to the other person to enter their home.
  • The homeowner is incapacitated or otherwise unable to provide consent for entry and someone is entering the home to ensure their safety.
  • The homeowner has died and the executor of their will has been granted access to the home.

It is important to remember that in all of these cases the individual must be authorized in some way in order to enter a locked home. If someone enters a locked home without permission or authorization they could be committing a crime and could face criminal charges.
