After Gough Whitlam, who served as Prime Minister of Australia from 1972 to 1975, Malcolm Fraser took over. Fraser, the leader of the Liberal Party, became Prime Minister following the dismissal of Whitlam by the Governor-General on November 11, 1975. He served until March 1983, when he was defeated by the Labor Party led by Bob Hawke.
