This is somewhat distorted. The Revolution in France while i did get out of hand and evolve in terrorism, was not originally in any sense anti-clerical. The situation was entirely different in Revolutionary Russia, where the governemtn was manically anti-relgiious (Godless Communists!) was the call of the day and some of the anti-clerical angle may have been a legitimate backlash at (Clergy Gone bad) such as Rasputin. Can you inmag8ine if we had an official Presidential Chaplain and he was arrested for Child abusing? wow, it can"t happen but. The Churchmen were always on the Law and Order side and could not approve of riots or terrorism which erupted in both Paris and Moscow. More so i n Russia than in Paris, there was a concern that the Regular cleric s might aid the Nobility in hiding valuables, money, etc using mission houses, covents, etcf as safe houses. This was not an idle angle. It is treagic as both revolutions got out of hand there were numerous clerical casualities of both the guillotine and getting more modern the modern machine-pistol or automatic carried by the N.K.,V.D men. The Bolsheviks even sacked cemeteries, many inside religious enclosures- the (Rape) of the tomb of Catherine II was such an unspeakable horrific act of vandalism.
