What are the opportunities for advancement when being a detective?

Detectives are investigators assigned in a law enforcement agency. Their only opportunity for advancement within the investigative career field are Detective Sergeant and Detective Lieutenant. However these positions are mostly supervisory and administrative positions and the higher within the department hierarchy you progress the less 'hands-on' investigative work you actually do.
