How did Iwo Jima end?

During World War II, the Battle of Iwo Jima (February-March 1945) ended with full Allied control of the island. The 35-day battle consisted of an initial stage in which most of the island's primary strong-points were taken; the next stage, requiring nearly a full month, consisted of mopping up isolated resistance and individual defenders.
