The most powerful group of Native Americans in the North at the time of English colonization was the Iroquois League, composed of the original members: the Mohawk, Seneca, Cayuga, Oneida and Onendaga nations (the League was then known as the Five Nations), and the Tuscarora (the arrival of which changed the name to the Six Nations.
