* Medical professionals have differing opinions on the effect of chemicals that may enter the skin when hair is colored or treated. There is anecdotal evidence that some may affect the developing baby. But the formulations used can vary very widely, and there is no consensus among medical experts on the extent to which they enter the fetal bloodstream (which is separate from the mother's).

Affect on Color

Hair professionals may be told to have the client confirm with their doctor about getting a color or any chemical service. Pregnancy can affect the tonal result of the color, and the ability for the color to last. It is up to you and your doctor if you would like the service to be performed.

Other Observations

Some doctors don't recommend it because the dye can actually get into your bloodstream but it's such a little amount that it wouldn't do any harm. But if you don't feel safe doing that, I suggest you leave your hair your natural color for your pregnancy.

Doctors tell you NOT to dye your hair at all while you are pregnant. It is dangerous to the fetus to do so. It's better just to wait and then treat yourself to a trip to a salon after the baby is born. Or get a friend to come over and have a "colour" party. Why risk the development of your child just for wanting your hair colored?

Actually doctors do not recommend this as all the chrmical ingredients are absorbed by your skin and can damage your baby.

That is all ridiculous! You can color your hair while pregnant. I'm a hairstylist and have been for well over a decade. If it were so awful to color your hair while pregnant, why would hairstylists be allowed to work through pregnancy? I worked all through my pregnancy coloring about 5-6 people a day, 4-5days a week and getting my hair colored and my doctor knew and approved of it. Also, if hair color were so bad that it went into your bloodstream and could kill your baby, why would you EVER want to color your hair, pregnant or not?!

Every salon has their own policy about hair dying for pregnant women. It's true it can get into your blood system and harm the baby. I have worked alongside pregnant colleagues and also been pregnant myself. Not every salon is the same and many use a variety of products -- some definitely could have stronger, more harmful products than others.

I noted side effects from dyeing/styling my hair (INCLUDING hair sprays) while pregnant, and also myself being a full-time stylist wasn't ideal.

My first born (while working full-time) and the children of 2 of my coworkers (part/full time) had sensitive skin and skin problems such as eczema, as well as Asthma, for which we all hold our lifestyle and selfishness accountable.

Neither I nor my husband had any history with eczema or asthma, and I ate well and exercised during pregnancy.

In my second pregnancy, I didn't dye my hair at all, and limited the hair coloring I did to 2 or 3 a day instead of an average of 5 to 7 a day. My daughter was born healthy and happy.Since then I've found clients and colleagues with similar stories, some even having premature births.
