What did Saint Patrick do to become a saint?

He was acclaimed a saint by the early Christian community in Ireland; as the current system of canonization had not yet been developed. While there had been previous Christian missionaries such as St Declan, he is credited with widespread conversions, introduction of literacy, and in convincing local rulers to abolish slavery.
