No same-sex couples have yet legally married in this county, although same-sex marriages are legally recognized under Missouri state law effective October 6, 2014.
As of November 5, 2014, the only jurisdiction in Missouri that permits same-sex couples to legally marry is the city of St. Louis, MO, which is an independent city not part of any county.
No same-sex couples have legally married in Jefferson county because the state Constitution of Missouri currently prohibits same-sex marriage. There are now two civil suits filed in Missouri state courts challenging the ban on same-sex marriage. Lawson v. Kelly was filed on June 24, 2014. Barrier v. Vasterling is scheduled for oral arguments on September 25, 2014. The outcome of these cases is unsure, since the Missouri Supreme Court ruled on February 27, 2013, that Survivor benefits were rightfully denied to the surviving partner of an officer of the highway patrol based on their marital status, not on sexual orientation. Since then, on November 14, 2013, the Governor Jay Nixon signed an executive order allowing same-sex couples married out of state to jointly file Missouri state income tax returns as "married" rather than "single." In the meantime, six cities and one county in Missouri offer a domestic partner registry that provides limited rights to same-sex couples.
