The formula for the answer is consistant. However the units are variable.
In either case the formula for square feet is as follows:
unit "A" in feet X unit "B" in feet = SQ. FT. Therefore, if in the above example both units "A" and "B" are in feet, the result is ("A" X "B") = SQ. FT.
= 16 X 16 = 256 SQ. FT.
However, the units are in inches the correct result can be computed in either of two ways.
1.. Convert each unit into feet and multiply one by the other
16" X 16" = 1.333' X 1.333'
= 1.778 SQ. FT.
or
2.. Multiply unit "A" in inches by unit "B" in inches and divide by 144
= 16" X 16" = 256 / 144 = 1.778 SQ. FT.
