Why society should be more concerned about continental drift and plate tectonics and what value does this research have for the public in general?

Continental drift happens very slowly, however, it does have some very serious consequences, which are earthquakes that happen along fault lines created by the stress of continental drift.

We are very far from being able to prevent earthquakes or even to predict them accurately, however, earthquakes are very dangerous, and it would seem to be a good idea to learn as much as we can about the process which causes them. Such knowledge may have important practical applications in the future.
