John Brown was arrested by U.S. Marines commanded by Colonel Robert E. Lee during his raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in October 1859. Brown had attempted to incite a slave uprising by seizing the federal armory there. After a brief standoff, the Marines stormed the armory, capturing Brown and several of his followers. He was later tried and executed for his actions.
