There are countries within all continents except one, Antarctica. There is no continent with only one country on it. Australia is often considered as such, but this is not the case. New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and most of the Pacific Islands are within the same continent.
On the other hand, 'the country' may refer to a rural area, or an area with a low population density. 'The country' is often thought to be the rural areas of the United States, particularly in the desert areas.
