The owl is often synonymous with intelligence as it dates back to the Ancient Greeks. Athena, goddess of wisdom, is often shown with an owl perching on her shoulder. It is most likely to do with the Ancient Greeks seeing the owls ability to hunt at night and mistaking it for intelligence. The fact of the matter is that owls are on the lesser scale of intelligence in birds. This is due to the way the owls brain is split up. One third of an owls brain is for sight, one for hearing, and one for everything else (hypothetically of course). So the lights are on, but nobody is home!
