What is the definition of command?

There are several meanings but in relation to boats, army navy etc, command is to excercise an authority (whether given to or taken by) over orhers to have them do bidding or follow orders. Command, like leadership, requires self sacrifice, sound judgement and, as I know from bitter experience, alot of luck.
