Does thermostat connect to top radiator hose?

yes - It does in most cases.

FYI - For some reason Nissan decided to install them in the bottom hose on many models (such as mid 80's to mid 90's for the 240SX and Pathfinders. There are other models as well, but can't name them right off hand.
