Most outboard motors have both a model number and a serial number either stamped on the transom clamp assembly or as in the case of the old classics, on the top of the rope pulley on the top of the engine. Later models (post WWII) outboard motors had a model and serial plate riveted to the side of or on top of the transom clamps (the large clamps that attach the motor to the transom of the boat. Most of the OMC engines like Evinrude Johnson and Gale Products from the 50s on used the serial plate method and as a secondary identification had the serial number stamped on an aluminum disc about the size of a nickel and attached to the Power head (engine) like a freeze out plug on automobile engines. This identification plug generally consisted of the model and the serial number. I remember identifying engines by their model numbers and ordering parts by the model and serial number as the manufacturers would sometimes improve on a part and that improved part would fit only on a certain series of serial numbers. Other than for parts ordering, most all identifications for year of manufacture were determined by the model number. So without a picture of the motor or the model number to go by you might try the blue book guide for outboard motors guessing the year and looking up the serial number in the guide for verification.
