Lee, Francis Lightfoot (1734-1797), a Revolutionary War statesman and signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, a brother of Richard Henry Lee and a cousin of "Light-Horse Harry" Lee. Lee was educated by tutors. He was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses (1758-68, 1769-76), and strongly opposed the policies of the British government. As a member of the Continental Congress from 1775 to 1779 he supported separation from Great Britain and helped draft the Articles of Confederation. Later he served in the Virginia Senate.
