Why do people call spiders arachnids?

In Greek Mythology, Arachne was killed by Athena after losing a spinning contest to her. After Arachne lost, she hung herself in the forest. Athena took pity on her, and turned her into a spider. Since her name was Arachne, Spiders are also known as Arachnids.
