Aside from the definitions in Confucianism, this thought simply implies that a person who values and is attracted to ideas, endeavors, objects, and even other persons, which have great intrinsic value, i.e., well bred, well made, well designed, well disciplined, unique, special, and other superlative descriptions, the person who has invested their own time and energy studying and seeking and experiencing a more meaningful and interesting course of life become of superior quality themselves; whereas, the "small" person is only interested in temporary sensual rewards of comfort -- mental, emotional, spiritual, physical, financial comforts, which are not enduring, but only yield a momentary feeling or sense of pleasure.
