What are the advantages and disadvantages of essay questions?

Some advantages:

• you can explain in your own Words
• you can get partial credit if you don't get it exactly correct
• you can get extra credit for a really great answer
• essay questions are usually worth more points on an exam

Some disadvantages:

• you have to study harder to really understand the material
• there are no hints like in a multiple-choice question
