Why would someone need a portfolio?

An artist's portfolio is a body of work collected and put together in such a way as it can be presented and shown in order that galleries or buyers can see the type of work that artist does. A great portfolio can get an artist shows, buyers and representation by a gallery. Without one no one can get an idea of what an artist's work looks like.
