Why do people use pinatas?

If you mean Piñatas they are used in many Latin american celebrations specially in places like Mexico they are made of paper with a star shape. Piñatas are containers filled with toys and candies, in some celebrations as Birhtdays kids play with wooden sticks hitting the Piñata until it breaks and they try to get as much as they can from its filling. Piñatas can be found in almost all Latin American countries.
