During Reconstruction, African Americans experienced significant improvements, including the legal abolition of slavery through the 13th Amendment, the establishment of the 14th Amendment granting citizenship, and the 15th Amendment securing voting rights for men. Many African Americans also gained access to education and opportunities for land ownership. However, these advancements were limited by systemic racism, the rise of Jim Crow laws, and violent reprisals from groups like the Ku Klux Klan, which sought to undermine their newly acquired rights and maintain white supremacy. Ultimately, many of the gains made during Reconstruction were rolled back in the subsequent decades.
