Why are the noses on old statues often destroyed?

Destroying or damaging the statues is a form of vandalism. It is mostly due to hatred and hence defacing a statue would probably give some kind of crooked satisfaction to vandals.

Nose being prominent on the face, it would first get the brunt of a hard object being used to deface it.
