To facilitate the movement of the baby out of the birth canal. All of the neurons have formed, but that are few neuroglia cells and the brain tissue is unmyelinated. This decreases the size of the head so it can travel through the birth canal. After that it increases in mass through the addition of more neuroglia cells, myelination, and connections between neurons.
