To become a mental therapist I need a master's degree in what?

Social Work (MSW) or Psychology. I would suggest social work, which provides much more practical information for people who are going to work in the real world, as opposed to academia. It also provides a broader base of information if you want to branch out into other areas beside counseling, such as case management or family services.
