How old is a coin with a square cut into it?

Coins with a square cut in the center are common in many Asian countries. They have been brought as souvenirs, keepsakes, and even as adornment across the world. Unfortunately it is not possible to determine the age of the coin by just having a square cut in. It could literally be thousands of years old or have been minted yesterday.
