Fort Lauderdale is named after a series of forts built during the Second Seminole War in the 1800s. The most notable of these was Fort Lauderdale, constructed in 1838 by Major William Lauderdale. The name "Lauderdale" itself originates from Major Lauderdale's surname. Over time, the area developed into a city that retained the fort's name.
