Why did Peter the great choose st petersburg to gain?

Peter was trying to improve trade with Europe, requiring a sea port with access to the Mediterranean Sea, something Russia lacked. So he took advantage of other conflicts that were active in Europe at the time and made an attempt at a black sea port. After capturing the area from Poland, he built St. Petersburg to be a new capital and the face that Russia showed Europe.
