Why does santa give lumps of coil to bad kids?

Because coal wasn't worth as much back then and it was supposed to be an insult. But today the value of coal has gone up a lot and it would not be considered an insult to give someone coal as a present.

Santa needs to come up with something else to give bad kids.

Maybe rocks?
