The salt eats the ice, then releases the water The elements in salt (NaCl) reacts with the elements in water (H2O) in a way that produces energy. In this case it is heat energy which raises the temp of the ice above 32 degrees F and the ice melts. Adding salt to water will make it boil faster for the same reason
