They were gradually phased out of the uniform throughout Scottish forces during the 1950's.

However British police attending Royal duties or performing a service requested by a British Royal will still wear the helmet in Scotland as part of their ceremonial uniform.

The helmets were phased out in Scotland due to the Scottish climate. The harsh wind, heavy rain, sudden storms and so on made it a burden to wear a helmet as officers found it difficult to effectively chase after fleeing suspects.

The hats are not only designed to protect the officer, but they are also supposed to help people recognise that an officer is nearby. However in Scottish climates, it can be difficult to spot a black helmet, so they use the caps instead since they are easy to spot.

Helmets are worn in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and other British-owned territories by foot officers. But officers patrolling in vehicles will wear the flat hat.
