Why do you have to wash your hands after touching a turtle?

It would be ideal to do so.

Turtles walk quite low to the ground, so they pick up a lot of germs when they move about.

If a turtle has been in water (the sea, a pond, etc), they could have picked up germs from the water, including faeces from other species.
