What happened in 1980 in the EU?

Nothing. The EU did not exist in 1980. It did not officially come into existence until November 1993. In 1980, the organisation that was eventually to become the European Union was the European Economic Community. Only 9 of Europe's countries were members then. The EU now has 28 members.
