The merits of television is that it prevents the English language from splitting into different languages. In the past, if two countries were divided by an ocean, their language would have evolved until they could not understand each other. Television makes it possible for us to hear someone from the other side of the Earth speak, thus enabling us to continue our understanding of one another.
The demerits of television is that oftentimes it promotes vulgar language or uses incorrect grammar. The effects of television are widespread, and if a large audience hears the language misused often enough, incorrect English/language will become more rampant. This can lead to people having a harder time finding a job (people make impressions on your grammar).
