The first Cotton Club opened in New York City in 1923 and was founded by Jack McKowen and later taken over by gangster Owney Madden. It became famous for featuring some of the best African American entertainers of the time, although it initially only allowed white patrons. The club played a significant role in the Harlem Renaissance, showcasing artists such as Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong.
