How long have the freemasons been around?

Many historians believe that the first evidence of freemasonry came with the legendary Knights Templar which dates as far back as 1096,but the first Masonic Lodge was established on 24 June 1717.Thus one could go as far to say that Freemasonry officially originated in 1717.
