Birds belong to the group vertebrata.In vertebrata there is a subgroup AVES to which all the birds belong.

Birds as an entire group do not form a species. In fact, species is the lowest rung of the classification ladder for some birds. When we note that the Black-capped Chickadee has the scientific name, Poecile atricapillus, it is the atricapillus that is the species.
