How were American and European forms of economic imperialism in the 19th century Asia similar?

Both used threats of military force to open Asian markets for trade. Also, Imperialism in this time period included Japanese imperialism. In certain cases such as the Boxer Rebellion and the Opium War, armed force was used. Additionally, these imperialists also battled among themselves over spheres of influence. Most of this involved China.
